While President Bush is proposing to disarm Saddam’s dictatorship in Iraq, to prevent future threats against the U.S., our ally France, has been very active in campaigning against it. Protests keep stating that the war is all about OIL. They are correct. Since 1997, in spite of the NATO sanctions, France and Russia have invested heavily in Iraq’s oil fields. Without these two countries, Iraq would not be an oil source for international markets. Just one French company, TotalFinaElf has rights worth over $60 Billion dollars to develop the Majnoon and Bin Umar fields in Iraq. Their investment covers over 25% Iraq’s Oil fields. Russia has also invested heavily in Iraq since 1997. Iraq now owes Russia over $8 billion, and the biggest Russian oil company, Lukoil has signed a $3.5 billion, for Iraq's al-Qurnah field. So, the war is about OIL. France and Russia want to protect their OIL investments while president Bush wants to protect our country. While we do not want to see our children's lives lost in a war in the Middle East, we definitely don't want our children's lives lost in the U.S. It just a matter of time before a maniac like Saddam sells the weapons that he and NATO admitted to having, but not found, to a terrorist fanatic bent on destroying the United States.
